What is it? -

Silk is a material that is woven together from the protein fiber of various insect larvae. Typically, the mulberry worm is reared in silk farming–called “sericulture”–for the purpose of making silk textiles.

The beginning -

Silk's origins trace back over 8,500 years ago, having been discovered at the early Neolithic Age tombs of Jiahu, China. However, the earliest example of a woven silk fabric comes from 3630 BCE, which was a wrapping used for a child’s body.

Empress Leizu's legend -

Despite the woven fabric from 3630 BCE, legend credits the discovery of silk to Chinese Empress Leizu from the 27th century BCE, who found silkworm cocoons in her tea. The empress unrolled the thread from the cocoon and thought of weaving it into cloth.

The Silk Road -

In 114 BCE, China opened the Silk Road, a trade route between China and the West. This trade route connected the East and West, allowing goods and culture to spread. Silk was one of the most valuable commodities traded along these routes, hence the name.

A symbol of status -

In ancient China, silk was consider a luxury item and was initially reserved for Chinese royalty as a symbol of status and wealth. In fact, the production of silk textiles was a closely guarded secret, and exporting silkworms or silk-producing technology was punishable by death.

Disease -

From the mid-1800s to 1870, silkworm diseases ravaged and destroyed many mulberry trees and worms. Even after measures were taken to curb disaster, the increase in the price of silk caused the decline of the silk industry in Europe.
